Overcoming the coupled climate and biodiversity crises and their societal impacts

Pörtner et al. propose solutions such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting landscapes and seascapes, and ensuring equitable resource access. These actions are vital for ecological function and human well-being.
Multi-stakeholder platforms for cross-border biodiversity conservation and landscape governance in East Africa: Perspectives and outlook
This working paper explores multi-stakeholder platforms (MSPs) for biodiversity conservation in East Africa. It assesses challenges, success factors, and the need for research on governance and monitoring. MSPs are crucial for managing biodiversity across sectors but require institutional linkages, skilled facilitation, science-policy connections, and sustainable financing.
Soils contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals through carbon sequestration. By enhancing soil health and fertility, soils can play a crucial role in climate action, land degradation neutrality, and alleviating hunger. The present study provides a spatially explicit report on the state of grassland soils and can be used as a baseline for future work to explore the impacts of livestock management on soil carbon at regional, country and farm levels. Assessing the current state of grassland systems and their potential to sequester carbon in the soil is of key importance to understand the trade-offs between grassland services on food security, biodiversity conservation and climate mitigation.
The European Union’s Landscapes For Our Future programme supports 22 integrated landscape management projects across 19 countries and 3 sub-regions across the Global South with solutions to context-specific land-use challenges around food and nutrition security, climate change and land/forest biodiversity.
