Team design
The team is not outside the landscape. It is a new strand entering the system, and its composition, conduct, relationships and capacity to learn shape what the intervention can achieve.
One team or a mosaic?
The answer depends on landscape complexity, geographic extent, target practices, interaction spaces and available resources.
Technical disciplines are not enough.
Build trust across difference, facilitate difficult conversations and navigate conflict.
Work with partial information without turning ambiguity into false certainty.
Ask good questions, listen well and seek perspectives that challenge existing frames.
Recognize blind spots, receive resistance without defensiveness and revise one’s own practice.
Include people with sustained relationships, language, local credibility and daily presence.
Move comfortably between domains and know when to draw on someone else’s deeper expertise.
What must the team be able to do?
Leadership and management are different functions.
Reads the wider system, sustains relationships, creates deliberative space, seeks dissent and redistributes authority so others can act.
Manages budget, reporting, procurement, work planning, risk and compliance. The function is essential, but it is not identical to system leadership.
Do not allow reporting and compliance to consume the same people whose relationships and sensing carry the intervention.
Community-based, women, youth and local team members may carry disproportionate sensing and trust-building value despite junior titles.
Identify where continuity depends on one person and build relationships, records and distributed capability before departures occur.
Continue through connected concepts
Place team design inside the eight-step operational pathway.
→Read what the team signals through who it is and how it acts.
→Explore leadership as an emergent capacity rather than command.
→Create the internal operating space required for honest learning.
→Build the team’s shared read and keep it alive.
