Glimpse · You are inside the system

Positionality

Every reading of a landscape is situated. Who you are, how you enter and the fact that you are there shape what you can see – and what the system does in response.

No view from nowherePositionality is not a lapse in objectivity to eliminate; it is a condition to make explicit.
Three layersEmbodied, enacted and existential positionality shape the intervention differently.
Reflexivity is practicalAsk repeatedly: from where am I reading this, and what does that position predispose me to see or miss?
YOUEXISTENTIALENACTEDEMBODIED
Your presence is already an intervention.Design for the effects you create rather than pretending you can observe from outside.
Grasp · Three layers

Some signals you carry. Some you choose. Some are unavoidable.

Embodied

Race, gender, nationality, language, accent and comportment send signals before you say anything. They cannot simply be switched off.

Enacted

Clothing, vehicles, technology, meeting formats, methods, who you choose to meet and how long you stay. These are design choices.

Existential

Your presence perturbs the system. Attention, money, legitimacy, expectation and access shift because the intervention exists.

Only enacted positionality is wholly under your control. The others require awareness, humility and adaptation rather than denial.
Explore · Audit your read

Counter the biases built into the visit.

Spatial biasAre you seeing places near roads, offices and accessible communities while missing the edges?
Seasonal biasWould this landscape, livelihood or conflict look different in another season?
Person biasWho does the itinerary make easy to meet, and who requires different channels or separate convening?
Professional biasDoes your discipline predispose you to see ecological, technical, economic or governance features while missing others?
Diplomatic biasWhich truths become harder to hear because of who introduced you, who is present or what your institution represents?
Team biasWhich perspectives are missing from the team itself? Complementarity can reduce blind spots without eliminating positionality.
Beware development tourism: the brief, dry-season, project-itinerary visit can bake several biases into the system read before design has even begun.
Deep dive · Turn reflexivity into architecture

Awareness alone is not enough.

Invite feedback on your presence

Build ways for communities and partners to say how the team is experienced, not merely what they think of project activities.

Map your own power

Include the intervention in the Power Vista. Track its money, legitimacy, networks, knowledge and convening capacity.

Use positionality as capacity

Your credentials and networks can open doors or connect actors. Deploy them towards the Alternative Heading with explicit awareness.

Reflexivity is not just ethical – it is effectiveness. Interventions fail when they misread contexts, miss key dynamics or reinforce the problems they aim to solve.
