Glimpse · Collective movement without command

Leadership

Leadership is a major opportunity point because effective leaders help power circulate: they convene, mediate, build trust and enable collective movement without making themselves the centre of it.

Leadership is not position powerFormal authority can help, but leadership is revealed through trust, risk-bearing and relational influence.
Leadership can be distributedCollaborative systems may contain several leaders; commoning can produce a wider leadership ecology.
Teams need leadership capabilityConvening, mediation and holding deliberative space without dominating it are core ILM capacities.
LEADERSHIP
Leadership redistributes capacity. The point is not to accumulate control but to help others act, deliberate and carry collective direction.
Grasp · Leadership and management

Both matter. They are not the same function.

Management

Maintains operations: budgets, compliance, schedules, reporting, contracts and the reliable delivery of agreed work.

Leadership

Maintains heading and relationships: reads the system, creates conditions for others to flourish, convenes difference and acts under uncertainty.

Do not overload one role. The person who steers relationships and heading is not necessarily the person best placed to manage budget and compliance.
Explore · Read leadership in the landscape

Look for behaviour, not titles.

Who attracts trust under risk?Consistency and reliability when outcomes are uncertain often reveal leadership more clearly than formal status.
Who makes others more capable?Leaders create room for agency, delegate, broker relationships and help others carry the work.
Who bears disproportionate risk?Effective leaders may trial, admit error, absorb heat and act in unfamiliar spaces for collective benefit.
Who shares power?Look for people who circulate information, voice, authority and recognition rather than accumulate them.
Where is leadership distributed?A collaborative system may have several leaders whose roles are relational and complementary.
What happens if one person disappears?Dependence on a single leader is a vulnerability. Ask whether leadership has become an ecology rather than a bottleneck.
Deep dive · Foxes and hedgehogs

Stay broad while sensing. Become decisive when action is required.

Complex landscapes reward leaders who can hold multiple explanations and perspectives without premature closure, yet still act with clarity when the moment arrives.

Fox mode

Curious, synthesizing, open to contradiction and able to move across disciplines, actors and scales while reading the system.

Hedgehog moment

When evidence and opportunity align, narrow attention enough to make a clear decision, release a foment or protect a principle.

Leadership ecology

Build networks in which leadership functions are distributed so collective capacity survives turnover and extends beyond one person.
